Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s

(1) Guna gourd mola worked in four layers of reverse appliqué with appliqué accents. Six hourglass-shaped gourd forms arranged in two rows on a red ground, with navy blue, white, and orange channels. Polychrome vertical bar appliqué inserts in blue, turquoise, green, yellow, and white within each gourd. Zigzag and geometric slit-cut filler details throughout the ground.

Guna gourd mola worked in three layers of reverse appliqué with appliqué accents. Six repeating bulbous gourd forms arranged in two rows of three on a dark gray ground, with red, orange, and cream channels. Each gourd contains polychrome vertical bar appliqué inserts, and small crescent-shaped appliqué accents in blue, yellow, turquoise, and pink at the neck of each form. Polychrome slit-cut filler details between the gourds.

Condition report:
