Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

(1) Guna geometric mola worked in three layers of reverse appliqué with appliqué accents. Two radiating four-pointed star motifs arranged in a quadrant composition on a dark red ground, with dark gray, blue, and orange channels. Central yellow star forms with slit-cut detailing. Polychrome triangular appliqué accents in purple, green, yellow, and pink throughout. Dense, fully filled composition.

(3) Guna geometric mola worked in three layers of reverse appliqué with appliqué accents. Bold interlocking angular forms on a red ground with blue and black channels. Polychrome appliqué lettering on a dark band at the neckline reads “A BEATRIZ CASTRO MARTINEZ,” identifying the maker, with yellow sawtooth trim above. Printed cotton fabric band at the hem.
