Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Striking pictorial reverse appliqué mola panel depicting a biblical narrative scene, likely the Sacrifice of Isaac. A large bearded patriarch figure in striped robes with long white hair dominates the right side, holding a knife in one pink appliquéd hand while grasping a reclining bound figure below. A small lamb appears at upper left beneath a turquoise cloud filled with rows of embroidered dots. Two appliquéd stars and a multicolored striped rainbow complete the sky. Executed in two layers of maroon and black cotton with extensive appliqué in white, pink, orange, blue, purple, and green, and dense polychrome hand embroidery throughout. The background is richly textured with scattered multicolored triangular fill motifs and concentric oval details.
