Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Reverse appliqué mola panel depicting the Crucifixion of Christ. The central figure is rendered in pink with a crown of thorns and outstretched arms upon a polychrome cross bearing the inscription “INRI.” A Roman soldier in orange with detailed armor and spear stands at left, while a robed female figure holding a chalice appears at right. A large polychrome bird with outstretched wings occupies the upper left corner. The background is densely filled with bold geometric X-pattern and cross-hatch motifs in vibrant blue, green, yellow, orange, pink, and purple. Executed in two layers of maroon and black cotton with extensive polychrome appliqué and elaborate hand embroidery detailing throughout the figures and geometric fill.
