Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Finely worked reverse appliqué mola panel depicting three stylized paddle or shovel figures, each containing triangular crests, banded midsections, and shield-shaped compartments with abstract motifs. Appliquéd letters — including “OPH,” “UAM,” and “PBE” — are integrated into the figures’ bodies, surrounded by smaller geometric fills of hearts, S-curves, and rectangular elements. Executed in three layers of red, black, and green cotton with extensive appliqué detailing in orange, blue, yellow, pink, lavender, and purple. Dense hand-stitching throughout with strong symmetry across the composition.
