Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Boldly composed reverse appliqué mola panel depicting a large sow nursing five piglets, executed in two layers of black and orange cotton with extensive appliqué and hand embroidery throughout. The sow’s body is densely filled with rows of brightly colored circles in red, pink, blue, yellow, and green, framed by sawtooth borders. A small human figure wearing a hat and holding a ceremonial vessel appears at lower left, while a stylized serpent occupies the upper register between two flowering trees. The background is enlivened with polychrome linear fill stitching in contrasting threads.
