Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Boldly composed mola panel depicting four tall vertical arrow or spear forms, each with a multi-striped chevron point at the top and a large bulbous base filled with closely worked horizontal bands of rainbow-colored embroidery, executed in three layers of black, magenta, and orange cotton, with additional appliqué and hand embroidery in green, blue, yellow, red, turquoise, lavender, lime, and white. Vertical reverse-appliqué slits in varied colors fill the spaces between the arrow shafts, and smaller arrow motifs are nested within the bodies of the larger forms. Dense hand-stitching throughout, with an exceptionally vivid palette.
