Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
12.25 x 16.25 inches
Vibrant mola panel with a botanical composition of three stylized cross-form blossoms across the upper register growing from a central branching stem with leaf forms, complemented by four quatrefoil and X-form blossoms arranged across the middle and lower registers, all set against a black ground densely filled with a field of small multicolored triangular reverse-appliqué slits in red, yellow, blue, green, orange, pink, and purple, executed in two layers of black and red cotton, with additional appliqué and hand embroidery in lime, magenta, lavender, white, blue, yellow, and green. The leaves are rendered in fine outline embroidery in contrasting colors, and each blossom contains a smaller cross or quatrefoil at its center. Dense hand-stitching throughout, with a striking dotted ground that creates a jewel-like overall effect.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
