Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
13 inches, 18 inches
Pair of three-dimensional mola animal dolls featuring a frog and owl, each masterfully executed in reverse appliqué with intricate maze-like patterns covering their bodies. The frog (13 inches) displays a complex interlacing design with flying bird motif in green, black, and orange cotton with small white square eyes and is worked in three layers. The owl (18 inches) features a more elaborate composition with prominent white square eyes, orange beak stripe, and multicolored linear patterns arranged in horizontal bands across the body, worked in three layers of red, white, and blue cotton. Both dolls demonstrate advanced reverse appliqué, appliqué, and hand embroidery techniques with precise curved cutwork following the organic animal forms. Each doll is fully stuffed and finished with solid cotton backing.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
