The Parker & Neal Mola Collection - Part 1
Lot 302:
Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
14 x 20.5 inches
Reverse appliqué mola pillow featuring a central anthropomorphic face with prominent white square eyes, black geometric nose, and pink smiling mouth, surrounded by an intricate composition of interlacing organic pathways. The flowing serpentine bands create a dynamic maze-like pattern around the central figure, filled with geometric symbols including quatrefoil crosses and linear motifs. Enhanced throughout with extensive white running-stitch embroidery creating rhythm and texture across the composition. Worked in 3 layers of burgundy, green, and brown cotton, achieved through advanced reverse appliqué, appliqué, and dense hand embroidery. Demonstrates precise curved cutwork, extraordinarily fine hand-stitching, and sophisticated anthropomorphic iconography. Converted to pillow with solid red cotton backing.
