The Parker & Neal Mola Collection - Part 1
Lot 292:
Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
16 x 19.25 inches
Reverse appliqué and appliqué mola panel, featuring an extraordinary composition of interlocking spiral and maze-like patterns that create a striking optical illusion effect. The design consists of multiple interconnected spirals and labyrinthine pathways that flow across the entire surface, with each element carefully integrated to form a unified whole. The alternating bands of navy, magenta, and yellow create dynamic visual movement that appears to pulse and shift as the eye follows the intricate pathways. The technical execution required exceptional skill to maintain consistent line weights and perfect connections throughout the complex interlocking system. Worked in three layers of cotton in black, magenta, and yellow, with precise hand-stitching maintaining smooth curves and sharp transitions throughout the demanding geometric composition. The vibrant patchwork binding strip adds an additional decorative element.
