Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s
15 x 16.5 inches
Reverse appliqué and appliqué mola panel with hand embroidery, featuring an elaborate mandala-style composition centered on an six-pointed star radiating from a circular medallion. The central star displays multiple concentric layers with zigzag and sawtooth edging throughout, surrounded by successive borders containing smaller four-pointed star motifs in various color combinations. The outer borders feature triangular and diamond-shaped accent elements. The entire composition demonstrates exceptional geometric precision and mathematical planning. Worked in four layers of cotton in bright orange, black, pink, and turquoise, with extraordinarily fine hand-stitching maintaining perfect symmetry and clean edges throughout the complex radiating pattern. The dense sawtooth borders create dynamic visual texture while the color progression from center to edge shows sophisticated design control.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
