Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s–1970s

Reverse appliqué, appliqué, and hand-embroidered mola panel depicting a large horned bull or ox at center wearing a chain bridle and decorated with cross and circle motifs along its body, with two small rider figures seated on its back, flanked by attendant beaked figures at left and lower right, executed in three layers of magenta, teal, and red cotton. The animal’s body incorporates reversed lettering reading “RUT” and “RUR,” possibly referencing a brand or mark. Dense polychrome slitwork and embroidered detail fills the surrounding field in teal, yellow, orange, blue, pink, and white, with decorative chain-stitch and hand-embroidered accents throughout the bull’s interior.
