Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
14.5 × 19.5 inches
Visually arresting reverse appliqué and appliqué mola panel of pure geometric abstraction, presenting a large bilaterally symmetrical labyrinthine form that fills the panel edge to edge. A heart-shaped apex anchors the central axis, from which the composition unfolds outward in densely packed concentric bands that sweep laterally into paired S-scroll extensions before turning back upon themselves in a fully contained, maze-like structure. Each successive register is separated by a continuous serrated zigzag border, creating an unbroken rhythmic pulse across the entire surface. Executed in three layers of deep red, yellow, and black cotton, with bands of orange, yellow-green, and teal revealed through the cutwork at each layer, producing a vibrant depth of color that intensifies toward the center. The stitching throughout is tight and even, maintaining crisp edge control across the complex curvilinear cutwork. Retains original blouse border with diamond-pattern appliqué trim in orange and black at top.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
