Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s
18.5 × 20 inches
Exceptionally worked reverse appliqué and appliqué mola panel of striking geometric abstraction, executed in four layers of orange, black, red, and pink cotton. The central field is dominated by a bilaterally symmetrical arrangement of paired arch and scroll forms — large semicircular domes surmounting interlocking S-curved bodies — flanked by diamond and triangular accent shapes, all outlined in serrated zigzag borders of pink, yellow, blue, and teal. The interior of each major form contains paired rectangular or shield-shaped compartments filled with dense vertical stripe-work in contrasting colors, each color combination unique across the composition. The entire central design is framed by a continuous border of individually worked rectangular panels, each with its own layered concentric outline and multicolor stripe fill and serrated inner edge — a demanding structural achievement that substantially increases the technical complexity of the piece. The upper border retains a black zigzag appliqué trim in yellow and multicolor. Executed with fine, consistent hand-stitching throughout. Retains original blouse border with printed indigo floral fabric at bottom.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
