The Parker & Neal Mola Collection - Part 1
Lot 248:
Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s
16.5 × 19.5 inches
Boldly worked in 3 layers of reverse appliqué, appliqué, and hand embroidery mola panel presenting a highly abstract cosmological composition centered on a large ovoid form with radiating interior fields, suggestive of celestial or spiritual imagery. The upper register features schematic zoomorphic and geometric figures of ambiguous identity, while the central mass expands outward in concentric zones of dense, varied fill work. Executed in three layers of red, orange, and teal cotton, with extensive embroidered detailing in white, pink, blue, purple, and brown throughout. Interior compartments are animated by finely rendered dash-work, stepped forms, and serrated outlines, achieving exceptional visual rhythm across the entire surface. Retains original blouse border with rick-rack trim at top.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection
