Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Striking reverse appliqué, appliqué, and hand embroidery mola panel presenting four jaguar spirit masks arranged in a symmetrical quadrant composition, each set within scrolling concentric frames on a black ground. Each mask features characteristic round eyes, elongated nose, whiskers, and bared teeth rendered in individualized multicolor embroidery, no two faces identical in palette. Scattered heart forms of varying size and color fill the dark interstices between the quadrants, while a central four-pointed diamond medallion in blue anchors the composition at the crossing. Executed in three layers of red, black, and orange cotton, with extensive embroidered detailing throughout in yellow, pink, blue, green, teal, and purple. Retains original blouse border with rick-rack trim at top.
