Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
13.5 × 16.5 inches
Complete Guna mola blouse featuring a boldly worked reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery front panel set into a black gathered yoke with short puffed sleeves trimmed in multicolor rick-rack, a lime green accent band at the panel junction, a white rick-rack border, and a novelty-printed cotton hem in teal with a whimsical figural motif. The mola panel presents a dominant double-oval labyrinthine composition — two large concentric oval forms joined at center by a narrow waist — rendered in continuously flowing lines of blue, yellow, orange, green, and white against a deep red ground. Each oval spirals inward through multiple registers of color, terminating in a small hooked or C-form element at the core. Corner and border fields carry stepped, scrolled, and meander motifs in complementary colors. The back panel repeats the composition with variation in color sequencing. Consistent hand-stitching throughout, with confident, even curves. Worked in three layers of red, blue, yellow, orange, green, and white cotton.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
