The Parker & Neal Mola Collection - Part 1
Lot 225:
Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
14 × 17 inches
Complete Guna mola blouse featuring a finely worked reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery front panel set into a dark brown figured velvet yoke with gathered short sleeves and a lime and pink floral printed cotton hem border. The mola panel presents a large, bilaterally symmetrical botanical composition organized in interlocking lobed quadrants, each enclosing nested leaf, flower, and frond forms in teal, pink, yellow, and blue. Throughout the central botanical mass, areas of dense multicolored running-stitch embroidery — worked in closely spaced polychrome threads — trace the contours of each leaf and pod form, adding exceptional textural depth. Side borders carry vertical stripe fields in multicolor. The stitching throughout is fine and consistent, with tight turns around complex curved forms. Worked in three layers of red, black, orange, yellow, pink, teal, and blue cotton.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
