Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Powerfully composed reverse appliqué mola panel dominated by a single large crested bird rendered in teal, orange, blue, and yellow on a deep red ground, its expansive body and curving tail filling the central field. The bird’s chest is internally detailed with dense vertical dash registers in teal, white, orange, and pink, while its raised crest is articulated in blue and orange arc forms. A reclining human figure in yellow occupies the foreground beneath the bird, accompanied by a gourd or vessel form in orange and purple at lower left. Two smaller quadrupeds with white square eyes appear at the left and right margins. The upper field carries concentric arc forms in blue, yellow, and pink suggesting feather or fan motifs. The entire panel is bordered on all sides with a dense field of multicolored triangle cutouts, with red rick-rack trim at the upper edge. Executed in reverse appliqué, applied appliqué, and embroidery in red, black, teal, orange, yellow, blue, pink, and white cotton, in three layers.
