Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

A political mola panel worked in two layers of black and teal-green cotton with extensive polychrome appliqué and hand embroidery throughout. The composition centers on a large portrait bust of a bespectacled male figure identified by appliquéd lettering as “PRESIDENTE” across the lower register and “GALINDO” across the upper, the letters rendered in multicolored cotton in varying scales. The face is elaborately worked with dense multicolored chevron embroidery throughout the beard, rainbow-stitched hair, an appliquéd orange nose, and pink-framed eyeglasses with embroidered white eyes. A white pendant hangs from the neck, embroidered with red vertical wavy lines. A miniature appliquéd party flag in pink and white, as well as, the Panamanian flag rendered in blue and white are represented.. The field throughout is saturated with vertical polychrome dash elements.
