Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Guna (Kuna) mola panel worked in two layers of red and black cotton with extensive polychrome appliqué and embroidery. The composition depicts a kneeling male figure receiving a visitation from a winged angel rendered in blue and multicolored concentric appliqué, the garment worked in horizontal bands of zigzag embroidery in rainbow colors. The entire ground is saturated with a field of multicolored triangle motifs enclosed by a black outline border. The reverse presents a striped red and white cotton backing, consistent with handwoven blouse fabric. Exceptionally dense hand-stitching throughout.
