Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Guna (Kuna) mola panel worked in three layers of black, red, and orange cotton with extensive polychrome appliqué and embroidery. The composition is organized as a 2×2 grid of four framed quadrants, each enclosing a distinct winged angel figure rendered in profile in shades of red, magenta, and orange against a black ground. Each quadrant is bordered by the appliquéd letters “A-N-G-E-L” distributed along its edges in multicolored letters. The four angels are depicted in varied dynamic poses — flying horizontally, standing with raised arms, and turning — each with elaborately detailed feathered wings rendered in dense parallel embroidered lines. Individual quadrant backgrounds carry polychrome dash fills in contrasting colors of green, yellow, and orange. The quadrants are separated by red dividing bands and enclosed within a blue inner border and red outer border on the black ground. The reverse presents four corresponding red quadrants on a black backing. Fine consistent hand-stitching throughout.
