Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Guna (Kuna) mola panel worked in two layers of red and orange cotton with extensive polychrome appliqué and embroidery. The composition centers on a large circular black medallion enclosing two confronting winged angels rendered in profile, each with elaborately striped multicolored wings and raised hands. Between them rises a tall red cross surmounted by a five-pointed star with a circular center, its vertical shaft bearing a stacked sequence of three bell forms in purple, yellow, and teal — each containing a small triangle motif — recalling a church tower or campanile. A horizontal bar near the top of the cross carries four additional triangle-in-arch motifs. Star clusters with polychrome dot fields anchor the lower corners of the medallion. The red ground flanking the medallion is filled with dense multicolored dash elements. Upper border trimmed with orange rickrack and black zigzag stitching. Fine consistent hand-stitching throughout.
