Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
13.5 × 17 inches
Guna (Kuna) mola panel worked in two layers of red and black cotton with extensive polychrome appliqué and embroidery. The composition depicts a crowned Madonna holding the Christ Child within a radiant circular mandorla, flanked by two winged angels rendered in pink appliqué with densely dotted faces, elaborate multicolored wings, and raised hands. The left angel holds a brown appliquéd cross; the right bears raised hands in a gesture of prayer. Below the central group, a radiant sun medallion bears the embroidered inscription “Hijo de Dios / JESUS” (Son of God / Jesus), surrounded by three sunburst motifs and a cross. The lower register features a row of interlocking hourglass-form altar vessels in orange, green, and blue, studded with cross motifs. Flanking six-pointed stars with embroidered centers anchor the upper corners. A dense border of multicolored triangle motifs frames all four edges. Fully saturated composition with fine hand-stitching throughout.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
