Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Guna (Kuna) mola panel worked in three layers of red, black, and orange cotton with extensive polychrome appliqué and embroidery. The composition features a large central rooster rendered with an elaborately detailed comb, a prominent wattle rendered in white with dense black running stitches, and a sweeping multicolored tail worked in concentric arcs of yellow, orange, pink, blue, and purple with herringbone embroidery throughout. The bird’s body and wings display finely stitched feather detail in alternating colors. Two matching appliquéd anchors — outlined in yellow and green respectively — flank the rooster in the lower corners, a motif suggesting coastal or maritime influence. A densely filled background of multicolored dash elements surrounds the central figure, enclosed within a bold rectangular border in black, green, and pink. Consistent fine hand-stitching throughout.
