Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Matched pair of Guna (Kuna) mola panels, each worked in three layers of red, gray, and orange cotton with extensive polychrome appliqué and embroidery. Each panel depicts two confronting pelicans with dramatically rendered toothed beaks, densely embroidered plumage, and prominent pouched bodies, with smaller fish motifs interspersed throughout. The word “PELICANOS” is rendered in multicolored appliquéd letters across the composition. Geometric step-and-wave border elements in teal, orange, pink, and yellow frame each panel on all sides. Fully filled composition with fine, consistent hand-stitching throughout.
