Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Matched pair of Guna (Kuna) mola panels, each worked in three layers of black, red, and orange cotton with extensive polychrome appliqué and embroidery. Each panel features two monumental arched spirit figures enclosing smaller anthropomorphic forms bearing multicolored letter and text motifs — likely a reference to the U.S. Canal Zone colonial presence — surmounted by circular dotted medallions. A central stylized creature with raised arm, worked in crimson and pink, bridges the paired arches on each panel. Densely filled backgrounds of multicolored dash motifs throughout. Borders trimmed with rickrack in orange, white, and red. Consistent fine hand-stitching with strong bilateral symmetry across the pair.
