Lot 152:
Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
12 × 15.5 inches
Finely worked reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery mola panel featuring sweeping vine and branch forms across the upper register, with pendant seed pod or blossom elements at either side, above four densely worked star-shaped leaf forms arranged symmetrically in quadrants, each uniquely detailed with embroidered vein and dot patterns suggesting tropical foliage. Small central medallions with miniature embroidered floral motifs anchor the quadrant compositions. The overall design evokes a lush canopy viewed from below, with interlocking curvilinear stems and abundant fill stitching throughout. Executed in three layers of red, black, and charcoal cotton, with extensive polychrome embroidered accents in orange, green, blue, yellow, pink, and purple.
