Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s
14 × 16½ inches
Boldly worked mola panel in reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery, depicting a densely packed multi-figure avian composition: two large confronting birds dominate the upper field, their opposing bodies rendered in sweeping curvilinear forms, flanked by a smaller profile bird at right; a second pair of large birds with deeply striated wings occupies the lower register, with a diminutive bird nestled at center below. All figures feature individually embroidered eyes with concentric circle surrounds in red, white, and blue. Worked in two layers of red and golden yellow cotton, the composition is fully saturated with no negative space, the interstitial areas resolved into parallel line fills, scrolling forms, and interlocking maze-like passages. Fine, consistent hand-stitching throughout.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection
