Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
16 × 20 inches
Vibrantly worked mola panel in reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery, featuring two monumental column forms — each terminating in a downward-pointing chevron and flanking a central axis — enclosing a vertical register of five sequentially colored M-shaped or butterfly motifs, each set within a rectangular ground and filled with scattered dot embroidery. Worked in three layers of red, black, and lime green cotton, with extensive multicolor appliqué throughout in yellow, blue, orange, pink, and purple. The lateral borders carry repeating columns of smaller M-motifs in sequenced colors, echoing the central figures. The upper register features a stylized undulating pattern in lime green with orange dash accents; the lower register terminates in a row of oval cutwork elements. Fine, consistent hand-stitching throughout with well-controlled underfolds at all angles.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection
