Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s

Worked in three layers of reverse appliqué with appliqué and embroidery accents on an orange and red ground. Complex Crucifixion narrative composition centering on a large polychrome cross bearing a figure with outstretched arms, a pink radiating halo, and embroidered facial details, rendered in a distinctly Guna visual vocabulary. The scene is populated with traditional Guna spiritual elements: a large serpent with an embroidered face coils beneath the cross, a rooster and small bird figures occupy framed panels at left, and tools and other instruments flank the composition at right. An additional mask-like faces appears in the lower register within the coils of the serpent. A frieze of polychrome X-motif squares borders the upper edge. Dense, fully filled composition with consistent hand-stitching and embroidery accents throughout. A striking example of syncretic imagery in which Christian iconography introduced by missionaries is reinterpreted through traditional Guna artistic and spiritual frameworks.
