Description
Vintage Bicentennial Kit Quilt – Americana Eagle in cross stitch red and blue thread on white. It measures 81 by 96 inches. It is machine pieced, hand embroidered, and hand quilted. There is a thin medium loft batting and a white reverse. The edge is finished with an applied white fabric binding. The design was adapted from an original quilt in the Smithsonian Institution; two center medallions, one an eagle surrounded by 13 stars, the other a basket of flowers with the center framed with laurel branches with flowers and a large outer border that has a bird in center of each side, and flanked by floral motifs. There is larger floral motif on each corner and triangular cross-stitch design along perimeter. It is in good condition with minor age discoloration and some loss to the quilting stitches. This quilt was published, page 172, in “Quilts Presidential and Patriotic” by Sue Reich, noted author, historian, and quilt appraiser.
