Group of 4 molas, includes 2 sets of matched pairs, with hand reverse appliqué, appliqué with some machine stitching, 3 layers.
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s, 15.5 x 20 inches
A closely matched pair of red-ground molas, each presenting abstract organic forms and outlined in broad yellow and orange contour channels, their bodies enclosing dense maze-like meander work and scattered with multicolor appliquéd stars in blue, green, yellow, pink, and white. The surrounding field is animated with rows of short embroidered dash elements in teal, blue, and white.

A closely matched pair of molas worked in a more architectural geometric style, featuring concentric triangular “mountain” or house forms in pink-mauve, orange, charcoal, and cream over a red ground, framed by stepped fretwork and labyrinthine maze borders. Each triangle is filled with skeletal centerline-and-rib motifs, and the dense comb-tooth edging surrounding the forms demonstrates the Guna mastery of interlocking abstract pattern in which negative space is as carefully controlled as the appliquéd shapes. The two panels are well-matched in design, palette, and construction, consistent with a coordinated blouse pair.
