Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s–1970s

Reverse appliqué, appliqué, and hand-embroidered mola panel depicting a helicopter inscribed “HELICOPTERO,” executed in three layers of red, black, and yellow cotton. The densely worked composition features a large stylized helicopter with concentric multi-layered rotor, spiral tail rotor, instrument panel with embroidered cross-form gauges, and three figures including two pilots wearing white caps and a standing figure at the open door. Surrounded by interlocking labyrinthine forms with colorful filling bars in yellow, orange, pink, blue, teal, and purple throughout. Upper border with appliquéd frieze of multicolored animals on a dark ground beneath a zigzag chevron edging.
