Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s
16 x 22.5 inches
Reverse appliqué mola panel featuring a sophisticated abstract spiritual composition centered on triangular tree-like forms arranged in a symmetrical pattern across the upper register. The lower section contains geometric vessels or ceremonial objects with intricate linear fill patterns, creating a narrative of spiritual practice and natural reverence. The design is enhanced throughout with dense parallel embroidered lines in white, turquoise, and green, adding textural richness and spiritual significance. Worked in three layers of red, black and yellow, and achieved through advanced reverse appliqué andappliqué. Demonstrates exceptional technical mastery with precise geometric cutwork, extraordinarily dense hand-stitching, and sophisticated symbolic composition. The fully saturated design shows perfect bilateral symmetry with expert control of complex spiritual iconography.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
