Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s
13 x 19 inches
Reverse appliqué and appliqué mola panel with hand embroidery, featuring eight large interlocking geometric maze patterns arranged in a symmetrical grid. Each maze-like motif contains multiple concentric levels with internal striping, creating a complex visual rhythm across the composition. Central cross elements with radiating lines connect the patterns, while small circular dots accent the intersections. The design demonstrates exceptional geometric precision and planning, with each maze perfectly balanced within its quadrant. Worked in three layers of cotton in dark red, orange, and red, with meticulous hand-stitching throughout creating clean, sharp edges on all curved and linear elements. The repetitive yet varied maze patterns suggest symbolic or spiritual significance.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
