Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Boldly worked reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery mola panel centering a large circular medallion enclosing a stylized spirit creature rendered in a four-pointed diamond form, with two toothed mouths opening above and below and a cross-set arrangement of concentric diamond eyes at center. Four small attendant spirit figures appear at the cardinal points within the medallion, each depicted in simplified frontal form with outstretched limbs. The outer field is densely filled with interlocking scroll and serpentine forms in yellow, green, and pink, with multicolored triangle accents throughout. Consistent hand-stitching and embroidered detail across all sections. Worked in two layers of red, black, yellow, orange, green, blue, and pink cotton.
