Description
Lakota Star Quilt by Norma Blacksmith Oglala Sioux measuring 90×100″. Pieced star comprised of 60 degree diamonds, about 3 inches along one side. The star is in shades of blue, white, with a little red and hand, with the side view of a Buffalo in white in the center of the star. The star sits on a Navy blue ground. It is machine pieced and hand quilted. Thin polyester batting and a light blue reverse. The edge is finished with an applied Navy blue bias tape binding. The quilt is signed on the reverse Norma Blacksmith Oglala Sioux. Norma Blacksmith (1940–2023) was a celebrated Oglala Lakota master quilter from Pine Ridge, South Dakota. She was renowned for keeping the traditional Lakota Star Quilt alive, an art form taught to her by her mother that serves as a sacred symbol of immortality, respect, and community honor. Original handmade quilts by the late Norma Blacksmith are rarely found for sale on the open market. Because she was a deeply community-minded master artist, the vast majority of her quilts were gifted to veterans, given to family, or used in sacred Lakota ceremonies rather than sold commercially.
Condition report:
It is in good condition with some fading and several spots. In house Flat Rate Shipping of $30 is a domestic shipping estimate for first quilt and includes insurance.
