Description
Featured is a Palestinian thobe from Jerusalem in the distinctive black and red colors. This thobe itself is vintage and it is possibly from the 1970s or 1980s. The thobe features traditional Palestinian cross stitch otherwise known as tatreez. Tatreez in itself is a centuries old tradition with the skills being passed down generations from mother to daughter. It is also a marker of Palestinian identity and cultural heritage. The patterns and color combinations of the tatreez signifies the wearer’s village, region, social status, and more with those in this thobe signifying that the wearer was possibly from Jerusalem. This thobe in particular features a slight v neck, three quarter sleeves, and the thobe itself being floor length. The sleeves, chest, shoulders, sides, and the bottom of the thobe are all decorated with tatreez. The thobe itself is made from cotton with a white, printed cotton lining that is decorated with flowers. There is a hole on one of the sleeves, some spots near another sleeve, the lining is loose, with a few loose threads. Laid flat: Length: 55″, Shoulders: 23″, Bust: 23″, Sleeves: 16″, and Waist: 22″. There are floral motifs, geometrics, human figures, and more in red, pink, green, blue, and yellow embroidery.
