Description
Antique Chinese embroidered silk jacket from the late Qing Dynasty or early 20th century. The collar and detailed needlework suggests either era. It features intricate hand embroidered designs in colorful threads on a vibrant blue silk ground. Along the center, there is a man in a brown robe surrounded by flowers and an observation deck. This image is repeated with the man in different colored robes for each reiteration. The collar is white with metallic embroidery used alongside the colorful threads to make the floral designs pop out. The cuffs of the sleeves are in different colored bands of silk with colorful floral embroidery. In the spaces of the robe, there are roses and other flowers represented. The hem of the robe matches the collar with a slit on both sides of the bottom with the same trim. Three clasps are along the front with one at the collar and two at the center. The inner lining is a gold silk damask with flowers and leaves represented. Several areas where fading has occurred on the front and there are a few loose threads on the collar. Small spots are present. The collar and hem displays toning due to age. Laid flat: Length: 47″, Shoulders: 26″, Chest: 23″, and Sleeves: 13.5″. Common stitches are the Peking knot for texture and detail. The peonies symbolize wealth, honor, and feminine beauty. The scholar’s garden is a repeated motif.
