Description

Vintage Burmese Kalaga tapestry with a silk backing. It is heavily embroidered and sequined with the piece typically being used as a wall hanging. The name kalaga means curtain and the piece is from Myanmar which is also known as Burma. The Burmese refer to these tapestries as shwe gyi do which means gold thread embroidery. It features intricate needlework, sequins, beads, and threads in gold and silver. An applique design is featured alongside embroidery to make a textured and 3D design of two figures sitting on horses. There are several glass beads which are missing from the tapestry, small wear on the silk backing, and a few loose threads. It measures 22″x38.5″. Also included is an Akha child’s hat. It belongs to the Akha people in Thailand. It is a decorative child’s hat with colorful, hand embroidered designs on a dark background. There are small white buttons, silver bells, and flat silver circular pieces all attached with red thread. The geometric embroidery is vibrant with a red thread to hook under the chin to keep securely on. It is in good condition.
