Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Worked in three layers of reverse appliqué with applied appliqué and embroidery. Two stylized flowering plants are presented side by side within tall arched frames set against a black ground. Each plant rises on a central stem bearing two pairs of curling leaves and crowned by a large blossom. The blossoms feature radiating finger-like petals — one rendered in blue and red, the other in pink — each with embroidered stamens in white. Below each bloom, a broad undulating calyx form is detailed with cyan chain-stitch wave lines. The paired leaves spiral outward from the stems in varied colors — white, orange, green, blue, yellow, and pink — with concentric embroidered veining in contrasting threads throughout. Each arched frame is outlined in multiple concentric channels of red, orange, green, and magenta, creating a rich layered border effect. White slit-work bars punctuate the space between the two arches at center top. The black ground gives the composition a striking visual depth, allowing the vivid botanical forms and their multicolored embroidered details to stand in bold relief. A well-composed example of the traditional flowering plant genre with strong color and careful symmetry.
