Description
Panama (Guna Yala), Circa 1970s

Reverse appliqué mola panel depicting a full-figure Santa Claus surrounded by Christmas imagery, executed in three layers of black, dark red, and green cotton with extensive appliqué and embroidery throughout. Santa is rendered in his characteristic suit with belt buckle, boots, and holly-trimmed cap, wearing wire-rimmed glasses and a finely stitched white beard. He holds a sack of toys in one hand and a Christmas stocking in the other. The surrounding field is densely filled with seasonal motifs including a decorated Christmas tree with bells and ornaments, a candle with poinsettia leaves, holly sprigs, wrapped gifts, a bell with bow, a platter of food, a heart ornament, and a gingerbread figure. Bold use of green, blue, yellow, orange, pink, purple, and white accents against the black ground.

Condition report:
