Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
14 × 19 inches
Boldly worked mola panel in reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery, depicting a large frontally presented moth or butterfly with bilaterally symmetrical wings, each wing lobe filled with rows of multicolor horizontal dash embroidery and populated with four-armed cruciform or X-shaped subsidiary figures, each individually colored in combinations of yellow, orange, blue, purple, pink, and white. The central body is rendered as a vertically oriented elongated torso form in charcoal with cyan dash fills, bisected by a horizontal pink stripe; the head features embroidered eyes and a rectangular mouth motif with white outline stitching. Curvilinear yellow-orange arcing bands define the wing boundaries against the deep charcoal ground. Worked in three layers of red, black, and orange cotton, the lateral field is saturated with vertical multicolor dash embroidery throughout. Fine, consistent hand-stitching with well-controlled underfolds.
