Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Vividly worked reverse appliqué mola panel presenting six spotted quadruped animals arranged in two registers of three, each figure outlined in a distinct color: blue, yellow, green, black, and pink, with embroidered white dot eyes and dotted reverse applique body markings throughout. Each animal faces left with a characteristic scrolled tail form. The figures are set within a grid divided by bold vertical and horizontal lines in black, yellow, blue, pink, and green against a crimson ground densely saturated with diagonal chevron and dash forms in orange throughout. A striking polychrome border of repeating S- and Y-form glyphs in yellow, orange, teal, pink, green, red, and purple on a black ground runs the full width of the upper register. Executed in three layers of red, burgundy, and orange cotton with extensive applied appliqué passages and polychrome embroidery throughout.
