Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Richly worked reverse appliqué mola panel featuring a large central cosmological figure with four expansive lobed wings outlined in concentric yellow and red bands against a charcoal ground. The figure’s circular head crowns the composition, enclosing a rayed interior with interlocking forms in red and blue. The segmented body is densely filled with horizontal registers of polychrome dash and stripe forms in red, green, orange, lavender, and white. Two animals flank the figure in the upper register, their densely stitched bodies rendered in red on orange. Cross forms occupy the outer upper corners, and hourglass and stepped motifs animate the lower wing quadrants. The surrounding field is saturated throughout with columns of colorful vertical dash forms. Executed in three layers of charcoal, red, and orange cotton with extensive applied appliqué passages and polychrome embroidery throughout.
