Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s

Matched pair of reverse appliqué mola panels, each depicting a large seated figure cradling an infant within a pointed triangular frame with sawtooth borders. The central figure wears a striped headdress and is rendered with embroidered facial features, dotted textile patterning across the body, and blue-striped wrist cuffs. The infant is shown with its own embroidered face and patterned wrapping. Two smaller figures with expressive embroidered faces and curving tails or lower body are set within rectangular panels in the upper corners, surrounded by multicolored triangle motifs in blue, teal, orange, yellow, pink, green, and white. Worked in three layers of deep red, black, and yellow cotton with additional appliqué and extensive embroidery in running stitch throughout. Fully saturated composition with sawtooth and triangle fills leaving no negative space. Dense hand-stitching throughout.
