Description
Antique c1870 Cocks Comb Variation Quilt measuring 72 by 73 inches. It is comprised of 4 blocks, 24 by 24 inches, set straight, 2 x 2, with an 11.5 half inch red and blue swag and bow border. It is hand pieced, hand appliquéd, and hand quilted. There is thin cotton batting and a white cotton reverse. The edge is finished with an applied white fabric binding. It is in fair condition with several spots, and fading. I’m unable to determine if the solid blue was originally green, if it was it has faded mostly uniformly. The block motif is primitive and unusual, and compares best to block 18.11 in Brackman’s Encyclopedia of Appliqué.
