Description
Antique 19th Century Towels and Accessories. The lot consists of a linen towel, two bonnets, a purse, a bundle of unspun flax, and five pairs of socks. Featured are a combination of cotton, wool, and linen accessories from Pennsylvania. The socks, towel, and unspun flax all contain a letter which tells of the date of creation and where. The socks that are included in this lot are a combination of either linen or a linen-wool blend. They were made in 1848 in Glenburn, PA where they were grown and spun on a farm in the area. There are a few moth holes on the woolen socks and one pair has brown embroidery at the top and the socks are in good/fair condition. The linen socks have some toning that is present on the three pairs but are otherwise in good/fair condition. Featured as well is a linen towel made by A. Reed on a farm where each step occurred in 1861. The linen towel has the following measurements: 21″x38.5″. There is some toning present around one spot but it is otherwise in good condition. Additionally included is a bundle of unspun flax from A. Reed’s farm where it was raised in 1862. A. Reed is notable for having plowed the seed for the flax of which he then made the linen towel included in this lot. The flax is in good condition and has a shine to it. It is tied together at one end and comes with a note that tells of its history. Additionally, there is a cotton reticule included which is a small drawstring pouch purse. It is 5″x9″, has floral embroidery, and is missing one of its beads. It is in good/fair condition and will need soaking to look brand new. Included as well are two sleeping bonnets that are made from cotton with one having embroidery on it. A string is attached to both for security on the head.
